Philippine military says China injured sailor in sea clash

The Philippine military reported that a Filipino sailor was injured by a baton during a confrontation with the China Coast Guard near the BRP Sierra Madre, a grounded vessel in the disputed South China Sea. The incident occurred Monday as Chinese rigid-hull inflatable boats approached the ship, which serves as a Philippine garrison.

According to a Philippine statement, Chinese Coast Guard personnel reacted aggressively, striking a Philippine Navy personnel on the head with a wooden baton. This action caused injury and damaged the Navy's rubber boat. The Philippine defense department characterized the encounter as part of a "clear pattern of provocative and hostile behavior" by the Chinese Coast Guard.

This meeting comes amidst an ongoing war of words between China and the Philippines concerning their competing maritime claims. Earlier in July, Manila filed a diplomatic protest over a "racist" video disseminated by Chinese state media, which depicted the Philippines in a derogatory manner.
