Philippines teen kills classmate, self in school shooting

A teenage student opened fire in a classroom at a high school affiliated with Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City, southern Philippines, killing a classmate before taking his own life. The 9th-grade suspect brought a handgun and a rifle to school and fired them in a classroom, according to police. The student then died by suicide. Initial reports suggested the suspect first targeted a teacher, but the teacher was not hit. The mayor of Zamboanga City, John Dalipe, stated that the suspect appeared to be wearing a body camera to livestream the attack. Videos circulating online showed the suspect moving down a hallway, pointing his firearm into a classroom, followed by gunshots and students fleeing in panic. While some local reports mentioned two injuries, school officials confirmed there were no additional fatalities or injuries. Hundreds of students were evacuated to safety following the shooting. University President Dr. Ernald Andal assured that the shooting had stopped and that student safety was the top priority. Police Chief Lt. Col. Jose Mellecio Nartatez Jr. said authorities are investigating the incident and will release confirmed information in due course. This incident follows a similar shooting in June at a public high school in Tacloban City, where three students died and over 20 were injured. Two suspects, aged 14 and 15, were arrested in that case. Authorities are currently examining the motive and the source of the firearms used in the Zamboanga shooting.
