PHOTO: Not even the ninth decade of life is an obstacle to planting! We visited Zagreb's most beautiful gardens, they are breathtaking

In the heart of Zagreb, amidst the urban bustle, lies a hidden gem: a breathtaking garden meticulously nurtured for a quarter-century by 84-year-old Blanka Horbec and her husband, Josip. This verdant oasis, tucked away in the courtyard of a Palmotićeva Street building, boasts an impressive collection of over 200 different plant species, transforming a once-neglected space into a local treasure.

The Horbecs' dedication has not gone unnoticed. Their garden has earned accolades, being named the most beautiful in Zagreb in its category at the international Floraart horticultural exhibition for the fourth time. While the garden is a shared space for all building residents, the Horbecs are the sole caretakers, a testament to their passion and commitment.

Their gardening journey began 25 years ago when they decided to tackle the neglected, trash-filled courtyard. With ample time in retirement, they embarked on a project that started small, with plants brought from the local Dolac market. Josip used salvaged tiles and stones to create pathways and borders, while Blanka meticulously planted and weeded, gradually expanding their green haven. Their efforts have resulted in a diverse collection, including hydrangeas, hostas, ferns, roses, pines, irises, and lavender.

Across town, 73-year-old Marica Jurakić is another testament to the enduring power of gardening. For 27 years, she has single-handedly cultivated an 800-square-meter garden in Oporovec, Gornja Dubrava. Her space, also recognized as the most beautiful in its larger category at Floraart, is a testament to her tireless work, with only a robotic mower named "Srećko" assisting her. Jurakić sources her approximately 160 plants from various garden centers, showcasing a deep commitment to her craft.
