PHOTOS: Nigeria dazzles at Benin’s 66th Independence anniversary celebration

Nigeria showcased its military prowess and cultural ties during the Republic of Benin's 66th Independence Anniversary celebration in Cotonou. The Nigerian contingent participated at the invitation of the Beninese government, reaffirming the strong relationship between the two neighboring nations.

The celebration, held at the iconic Amazone, featured military parades and cultural performances. The Nigerian contingent, led by the Commander of the 9th Brigade Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. Ayokunle Olufemi Owolabi, executed a flawless march past in both slow and quick time. Their display of "exceptional discipline, impeccable coordination, and military precision" earned loud applause from Benin's President, Romuald Wadagni, and other distinguished guests.

A highlight of Nigeria's participation was a breathtaking silent drill performance by the Nigerian Army. This spectacular display showcased "extraordinary dexterity, synchronization and mastery of arms handling," mesmerizing the audience and drawing sustained ovations from thousands of spectators.

Nigeria's Ambassador to Benin, Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim, and the Nigerian Defence Attaché, Col. S.A. Yahaya, were among the senior officials present. The Army stated that Nigeria's participation reflected the "enduring cordial relationship" between the countries and demonstrated a commitment to strengthening military diplomacy, regional partnerships, and peace in West Africa.

The contingent's performance projected the professionalism of the Nigerian Army and reinforced historical ties, contributing to a successful celebration of Benin's independence.
