Phu Quoc Cracks Down on Officials Aiding Land Violations

Phu Quoc, Vietnam's special administrative region, is launching a rigorous campaign against officials who have shown negligence, dereliction of duty, or have actively supported land violations. Leaders at the Phu Quoc People's Committee have stated that civil servants who fail to manage their responsibilities, avoid their duties, or cover up illegal land use will face severe penalties.

This initiative comes as the Phu Quoc People's Committee officially launched a special task force on July 20, 2026. This team, along with its support staff, will focus on inspecting and addressing violations related to land use, construction order, road safety corridors, coastal corridors, and urban order across the region. The operation is set for a 90-day intensive period, aiming for a significant shift in land management and urban planning.

The task force will concentrate on issues such as the encroachment of public land and forests, unauthorized changes in land use, illegal land reclamation, and the improper leasing or transfer of land. They will also review compliance with previous violation rulings and cross-reference legal documents and zoning maps to identify and prevent new infringements. The crackdown targets illegal constructions, those built in restricted zones, and structures that disrupt urban planning and public safety.

Officials emphasize a shift from a reactive approach of "detecting and then xử lý" to a proactive strategy of "early detection, timely prevention, and strict xử lý." The goal is to prevent violations from being completed before action is taken and to avoid prolonged non-compliance or the legalization of illegal structures. The success of this campaign will be a key metric for evaluating the accountability of responsible officials. Ultimately, Phu Quoc aims to foster a transparent investment climate and develop into a modern, civilized coastal city, preparing to host international events like the APEC Summit in 2027.
