Pichetto uses IMF chief's visit to blast Milei government's infrastructure neglect

Argentine national deputy Miguel Ángel Pichetto seized upon the visit of International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva to Vaca Muerta to launch a sharp critique of President Javier Milei's administration. Pichetto posted a video on social media showcasing the severe deterioration of Route 151, a primary corridor for the oil industry, juxtaposing its state with the government's efforts to highlight the nation's energy potential.

"Good thing they took Kristalina Georgieva to Vaca Muerta by helicopter," Pichetto quipped ironically on his X account. He accompanied the video with a statement: "The government exhibits Argentina's energy potential to the world but abandons the roads used by workers, supplies, and production." The legislator's remarks followed Georgieva's two-hour tour of Loma Campana, a major YPF-operated block in Neuquén, accompanied by Economy Minister Luis Caputo.

Vaca Muerta, a vast energy formation, is considered a cornerstone of Argentina's potential to generate the dollars needed to service its debt. Loma Campana, developed by YPF in partnership with Chevron, represents about 16% of the country's unconventional oil production and symbolizes a sector that has transformed from a significant source of external deficit into a major foreign currency earner.

During her visit, Georgieva received a presentation on YPF's progress and the development of the Vaca Muerta region. She also toured a state-of-the-art drilling rig and spoke with workers and representatives from supplier companies. YPF CEO Horacio Marín remarked after the visit, "We showed them firsthand the country's energy transformation and the enormous potential Argentina has to become a global energy exporter."
