Pioneering DJ Uncle (Yoo Baek-yeol) dies at 70

Yoo Baek-yeol, known professionally as DJ Uncle and a foundational figure in South Korea's electronic music scene, passed away on August 17 at the age of 70. He had been battling late-stage cancer.

DJ Uncle's career spanned nearly five decades, beginning in the 1970s at U.S. military clubs. He transitioned through music lounges in the early 1980s before becoming a prominent DJ in nightclubs throughout the 80s and 90s. By the mid-90s, he was a key force in introducing electronic music and club culture to Seoul's vibrant Hongdae district.

He co-founded Club MI near Hongdae in 1995 and later managed the larger Club M2, significantly contributing to the spread of electronic music in the country. Alongside other venue operators, he helped organize 'Hongdae Club Day,' fostering the golden age of Hongdae's club scene in the 2000s. His stage name, DJ Uncle, originated from being called 'DJ Ajusshi' (DJ Uncle) at clubs, with his professional moniker 'Unkle' playfully substituting 'K' for 'C' to represent Korea.

Beyond his DJing, Yoo Baek-yeol was also a music producer and released albums. In 2004, he released his full-length album 'Electronic Information,' featuring tracks like 'My Fantasy Life' and 'Tomorrow's Memories.' His career was marked by both professional success and profound personal loss; his daughter, DJ Apex (Yoo Ji-in), who followed in his footsteps as an electronic music DJ, died in July 2023 at the age of 31.
