Pitstop Community hosts maiden triathlon in Lagos to promote healthy living

Lagos, Nigeria – Fitness enthusiasts converged in Ikoyi on Sunday for the inaugural Pitstop Community Super Sprint Triathlon, a landmark event designed to invigorate healthy lifestyles and cultivate grassroots sports development across Nigeria. This pioneering event, held at the scenic Pitstop Village, presented a challenging yet exhilarating three-stage race: a 150-meter swim, a demanding 20-kilometer cycling course, and a brisk 2.5-kilometer run. The competition was further sweetened by over ₦2 million in cash prizes, drawing a diverse field of both amateur and seasoned athletes eager to test their mettle.

Amina D. Adegboro, the visionary Founder of Pitstop Community, articulated the initiative's core mission: to give back to society and fortify the grassroots sports ecosystem. "We want people to stay active, stay disciplined, and live a healthy lifestyle," she emphasized, highlighting the community's evolution from a cycling group formed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 to a comprehensive fitness collective encompassing running and walking.

The event, which saw approximately 90 participants registered and about half successfully complete the race after rigorous safety checks, was lauded by Wale Oladunjoye, President of the Nigeria Triathlon Union. He described it as a pivotal moment for the sport in Nigeria, stating, "We have been looking for this kind of environment. It will help the sport grow and attract more people." Oladunjoye also seized the opportunity to advocate for enhanced infrastructure, urging the government to prioritize facilities that can bolster such events.

One of the day's most inspiring narratives was the performance of Preye John Dede, a top finisher who triumphed over a spine injury. "I feel very excited," Dede shared, reflecting on his journey. "I wasn’t sure I could win, but after the swimming, I knew cycling would help me. I just pushed myself." He expressed profound gratitude to the organizers for creating this vital platform, underscoring its potential to nurture Nigerian athletes for global competitions like the Olympics. Pitstop Community has pledged to make the triathlon a recurring event, possibly on a quarterly basis, and is actively seeking further sponsorship to elevate future editions.
