PL Leader Says Alcolumbre Will Face Daily Pressure to Open Moraes Impeachment Case

Carlos Portinho says Davi Alcolumbre will hear from Brazil's Liberal Party every day until the Senate president opens an impeachment case against Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

The PL leader in the Senate made the threat in an interview on Wednesday, pointing to newly revealed messages intercepted by the Federal Police in its investigation involving Banco Master owner Daniel Vorcaro. Portinho said the responsibility for deciding what role the Senate will play rests with Alcolumbre.

The party has filed impeachment requests against Moraes and a request to remove Federal Police Director-General Andrei Rodrigues. It has also filed a criminal complaint against Attorney General Paulo Gonet. All three officials appear in conversations involving Vorcaro.

A Federal Police report cited meetings between Vorcaro and Moraes on Nov. 14 and 16, shortly before the former banker’s first arrest. Vorcaro allegedly asked Moraes to intervene with the police and the Attorney General’s Office to halt the Banco Master investigation, which is before the Supreme Court. The case is assigned to Justice André Mendonça.

The PL is also seeking to link President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to the scandal. House leader Sóstenes Cavalcante said Lula would be “an accomplice to this criminal gang” if he did not immediately remove and replace Rodrigues.
