Plane pilot dies in violent collision with Pennsylvania State Police helicopter

A pilot lost his life Wednesday after his small aircraft collided with a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter near a local airfield. The two troopers on board the helicopter survived the violent impact and are reported to be in stable condition, according to authorities.

The accident occurred at the Carlisle Airport, approximately 170 kilometers northwest of Philadelphia. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) identified the involved aircraft as a State Police Bell 407 helicopter and a Cessna 150 airplane. Both the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the FAA are investigating the incident as a mid-air collision, though officials have not yet confirmed if the plane made contact with the ground before the crash.

Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens, interim commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police, explained that the airplane was descending toward the runway when it deviated from its path and struck the helicopter, which was near the ground. The force of the collision severely damaged the police helicopter, causing it to lose rotor blades and its tail before crashing on its side. Governor Josh Shapiro commented that the situation "could have been much worse" and "much more tragic for our State Police family."
