Plateau mourns seven miners killed in Gassa mine collapse

Tragedy struck the Gassa community in Plateau State as seven miners lost their lives in a mining pit collapse. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, August 12, 2026, while the victims were engaged in mining activities.

Hon. Peter Kanang Gwom, Plateau State Commissioner for Environment, Climate Change and Mineral Development, extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and the Gassa community. He described the event as a "painful loss" and highlighted that the loss of lives in mining-related incidents remains a significant concern for the state.

Commissioner Gwom emphasized the critical need for enhanced safety standards, regulatory compliance, and responsible mining practices to prevent future tragedies. He stated that the ministry is committed to promoting safer mining operations and urged all stakeholders in the sector to prioritize safety to protect lives and property. The commissioner prayed for strength for the bereaved families and the repose of the souls of the departed miners.
