Play "Herscht 07769" based on Nobel laureate's novel to premiere at Split Summer Festival

The central dramatic event of this year's Split Summer Festival will be the premiere of the play "Herscht 07769." The production is based on the novel by László Krasznahorkai, a Nobel Prize winner for literature and one of contemporary Europe's most significant writers. The play is directed by Ivica Buljan.

The novel, which serves as the source material, presents a suggestive and unsettling, yet surprisingly lucid, portrayal of contemporary Europe. It depicts a continent characterized by social instability across all levels. While the story is set in a fictional German town, the events unfolding within it are easily recognizable in various European contexts.

At the heart of the narrative is Florian Herscht, a young man whose passivity and isolation come into contact with a radicalized environment. An atmosphere of threat and ideological tension gradually builds around him. By blurring the lines between reality and the characters' inner worlds, "Herscht 07769" creates space for a layered theatrical interpretation of the current moment.

The premiere of "Herscht 07769" is scheduled for July 29 at 8 p.m., with subsequent performances on July 30 and 31, and August 1. The cast includes a large ensemble of actors, and the production team features Ivica Buljan as director, Ivan Penović for dramaturgy and adaptation, Ana Savić Gecan for costume design, Aleksandar Denić for scenography, and Lukša Vučić for music.
