Plaza Garibaldi Celebrates 100th Birthday of Ranchera Icon Tomás Méndez

Mexico City's iconic Plaza Garibaldi recently hosted a vibrant celebration honoring the 100th birthday of Tomás Méndez, the celebrated composer behind enduring ranchera classics such as "Cucurrucucú paloma," "Bala perdida," and "Paloma negra."

The plaza, historically a hub for Mexican music and a gathering place for legends like Chavela Vargas and José Alfredo Jiménez, provided a fitting backdrop for the centenary. Méndez's monument in the plaza, distinguished by a dove, was adorned with flowers placed by attendees.

The event featured a diverse lineup of performers, including "El Pelao" José Antonio Hernández and the international mariachi group Nuestro Mariachi. Young talents like 16-year-old Jimena Navarro, a finalist on "La Voz Kids México," and Diego Peralta also performed. Maite Porras Méndez, the composer's granddaughter, further honored his legacy.

A special highlight was the performance by María Elena Leal, daughter of the legendary Lola Beltrán. Leal emotionally sang Méndez's hits, which her mother popularized, and shared anecdotes about the close friendship between Beltrán and Méndez. The celebration culminated in a collective rendition of "Cucurrucucú paloma," with all the guest artists joining on stage.
