PM Anwar congratulates Andy Burnham, ready to strengthen UK cooperation

Malaysia's Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has extended congratulations to Andy Burnham on his assumption of the UK's highest office. Anwar conveyed his optimism that the strategic partnership between Malaysia and the United Kingdom will be further enhanced under Burnham's leadership.

Key areas for deepened cooperation include finalizing the Digital Trade Agreement and expanding joint efforts in artificial intelligence (AI), digitalization, clean energy, and defense. Furthermore, Prime Minister Anwar welcomed Burnham's recent remarks concerning the situation in Gaza. He was particularly encouraged by Burnham's acknowledgment that the UK's initial response to the suffering in Gaza was insufficient and his call for increased pressure on the Israeli regime. "I am also encouraged by Burnham's latest acknowledgment that Britain's initial response to the suffering of the people in Gaza was inadequate, and his call for greater pressure to be exerted on the Israeli regime," Anwar noted.

Anwar also took the opportunity to thank Keir Starmer for his contributions to strengthening Malaysia-UK relations during his tenure. The upcoming 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and the UK next year presents a significant opportunity to renew commitments and forge a new chapter in bilateral cooperation.
