PM Modi and President Trump will work out Russian-oil related 100 per cent tariff issue: Senior US official

Senior U.S. Presidential Counsellor Peter Navarro expressed confidence that President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will amicably resolve the contentious issue of tariffs linked to Russian oil imports. Navarro highlighted the strong working relationship between the two leaders.

Navarro addressed concerns regarding India's significant engagement in the Russian oil trade, particularly after the invasion of Ukraine. He noted that this issue, which he previously wrote about, has since been settled. He also recounted facing strong criticism from India on the internet for his earlier commentary.

Amid these discussions, the U.S. Senate has advanced bipartisan legislation that could empower President Trump to impose tariffs as high as 100% on goods from nations, including India and China, that continue to import Russian oil and gas. This proposed measure aims to increase economic pressure on Russia by targeting countries that sustain its economy and military operations through energy trade.
