PM Modi's foreign trips since 2021 cost India ₹557.51 crore: Govt

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's extensive foreign travels since 2021 have incurred a total cost of ₹557.51 crore, according to information presented to India's Parliament. These journeys have spanned 77 countries, with the year 2025 marking the highest expenditure, amounting to ₹187.83 crore for visits to 23 nations.

Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita provided these figures in the Rajya Sabha in response to questions from MPs. The data indicates that the PM's foreign visits have been a significant financial undertaking. Margherita noted that the compilation of expenses for a June visit to France for a G20 Summit outreach session and bilateral meetings was still underway for 2026.

High level visits by the Prime Minister are established means of fostering closer relations with foreign countries and promoting India’s engagements at bilateral, regional and global levels.

Despite the costs, the government asserts that these high-level visits are crucial for fostering closer international relations and promoting India's engagement on bilateral, regional, and global platforms. Margherita highlighted that these trips have led to the signing of 316 agreements since 2021 across various sectors, including defense, trade, investment, healthcare, and renewable energy.

This year, the most expensive trip was to Norway in May, costing ₹17.46 crore, followed by visits to Israel, Seychelles, and Sweden. The government views these diplomatic efforts as instrumental in strengthening partnerships and facilitating cooperation in critical areas, ultimately benefiting India's strategic and economic interests.

These visits, and the understandings and agreements concluded therein, facilitate the strengthening of partnerships across a wide range of sectors, including technology, innovation, trade and investment, defence and energy cooperation, and resilient supply chains, among others.
