PM says modernisation of Pakistan Railways instrumental in establishing country as a regional hub

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized on Monday that the modernization of Pakistan Railways' infrastructure is vital for positioning Pakistan as a significant regional trade and logistics hub. Speaking at a review meeting for the Pakistan Railways Transformation Plan, he urged for rapid upgrades to enhance the railway's efficiency and profitability.

Sharif highlighted the railway as the most cost-effective and efficient mode of transport for both passengers and freight. He asserted that a modern railway system would play a pivotal role in bolstering Pakistan's economy, fostering trade, and improving regional connectivity. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of completing all railway development projects within their scheduled timelines while adhering to high-quality standards.

During the meeting, officials provided updates on several key projects. The Detailed Engineering Design for the Karachi-Rohri section of Main Line-1 (ML-1) has been completed. The ML-3 Rohri-Nok Kundi upgrade will proceed through the Public Sector Development Programme and bridge financing. Significant progress has been made on the Thar Coal Railway Connectivity Project, with 60 percent of the work completed on the link to Chhor Railway Station, and an expected completion date of December 2026.

The railway was the most cost-effective and efficient mode of transport for both passengers and freight.

Further initiatives include engaging international consultants to support reforms, outsourcing services at railway-operated schools and hospitals, and commencing the commercialization of six major railway stations. The Prime Minister had previously approved a strategic roadmap for comprehensive reforms, including service improvements, digitization, track upgrades, and private sector investment. Work on the ML-1 project is anticipated to begin in July 2026, aiming to enhance freight and passenger connectivity from Karachi to Peshawar.
