PNL Congress Tense: Bolojan Runs Unopposed as Veștea Threatens Legal War

The National Liberal Party (PNL) faces a pivotal moment as it convenes an Extraordinary Congress on Sunday, June 21. The event is set to elect a new leadership, with Ilie Bolojan standing as the only candidate for the party's presidency. Approximately 2,500 delegates from across Romania are expected to attend the congress at Romexpo.

The congress's convocation, approved by a significant majority in the National Extraordinary Council, is intended to usher in a period of modernization for the PNL. Bolojan's candidacy is presented under the motion "Modernization with Roots," emphasizing reform, professionalism, and responsibility. He aims to rebuild trust and provide a clear direction for the party, proposing Dan Motreanu for first vice-president and Robert Sighiartău for general secretary, alongside a team of eight vice-presidents.

Adding significant tension, Adrian Veștea, who was recently designated as Prime Minister, is contesting the legality of the congress. Veștea's challenge comes after his designation by President Nicușor Dan, reportedly without prior consultation with the PNL leadership. He has threatened legal action, creating a rift within the party as it attempts to solidify its leadership and statutory framework. Key statutory changes on the agenda include establishing a National Permanent Bureau as the main leadership body, abolishing the Executive Bureau, returning to leadership elections based on motions, and reducing the number of first vice-presidents to one.
