PNL definitively closes door on new coalition with PSD after Grindeanu's attack on Bolojan

Romania's National Liberal Party (PNL) has firmly closed the door on any future coalition government with the Social Democratic Party (PSD), reacting sharply to recent statements by PSD President Sorin Grindeanu targeting interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. PNL leaders declared that their decision to cease governing with PSD is final, emphasizing that trust between the two parties has been irrevocably compromised.

Alexandru Muraru, a PNL leader from Iași, stated that PNL will not alter its decision regarding PSD, accusing the social democrats of instigating the current political instability. He pointed to PSD's collaboration with AUR in initiating and voting for a no-confidence motion, alongside alleged "political blackmail" and behind-the-scenes maneuvering aimed at weakening and dividing PNL. Muraru asserted that those who believe PSD has fundamentally changed its political approach are ignoring recent history.

PNL has put forth a proposal for a "Pact for Romania," an agreement where all parliamentary parties would publicly commit to and support national priorities. Muraru outlined a plan for a minority PNL-USR-UDMR government in an initial phase, followed by a power alternation with a minority PSD government. He described this as a balanced solution offering stability without forcing parties into an "untrustworthy alliance."

Furthermore, Muraru accused PSD of attempting to dictate internal decisions to other political formations, labeling this attitude as "profoundly undemocratic" and indicative of PSD's historical "mentality of control, arrogance, and abuse of power." Echoing this sentiment, Ionel Bogdan, PNL president for Maramureș, declared that for PNL, the coalition with PSD is a "closed chapter," emphasizing that trust is essential for a functional coalition and that PSD's actions have eroded it. He stated that the party's members and organizations are clear: "a direction without PSD."
