Pochettino Extends Contract as U.S. Men's National Soccer Team Coach Through 2030

The United States Soccer Federation announced the contract extension for Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino, who will now lead the men's national team until the 2030 World Cup. This renewed commitment aims to foster continued growth within the senior team and positively influence the broader U.S. soccer ecosystem.

Pochettino, 54, assumed leadership of the U.S. team in September 2024. His primary focus was preparing the host nation for the 2026 World Cup, where the team reached the round of 16 before being eliminated by Belgium. The federation stated that Pochettino and his technical staff will also provide guidance and support for the development of the national program across various facets, including youth soccer, coaching education, and collaboration with professional leagues.

"After having worked two years with US Soccer, it has become clear that there is enormous potential to make the national team program even stronger," Pochettino was quoted as saying in the statement. His new contract binds him through the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. A key objective under his extended tenure will be ensuring the United States qualifies for this prestigious tournament.

In the 2026 World Cup, the U.S. team showcased a mixed performance, starting with a decisive 4-0 victory over Paraguay and a 2-0 win against Australia. Despite a 2-3 loss to Turkey in their final group match, they topped their group. In the knockout stage, they defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0. However, the team faced challenges, including the suspension of their top scorer, Folarin Balogun, for the round of 16 match due to an expulsion. The team's World Cup journey concluded with a 4-1 defeat against Belgium in the round of 16, ending their aspirations for that tournament. The team is set to compete in the upcoming CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup tournaments before the 2030 World Cup.
