Poirot Actor David Suchet, 80, Looks Different Now

David Suchet, the 80-year-old English actor internationally celebrated for his iconic portrayal of Hercule Poirot, is reflecting on his decades-long journey with the beloved detective.

While I was reading them, I gradually realized that I had never actually seen the character I was reading about depicted on screen... He was quite different: subtler, more meticulous, and above all, more human than the person I had seen on screen until then.

Suchet's tenure as Poirot in "Agatha Christie's Poirot" spanned from 1989 to 2013, earning him a BAFTA nomination in 1991. He took on the role after actor Peter Ustinov suggested Suchet would be a perfect fit. Initially hesitant, Suchet was persuaded after reading the novels and realizing the on-screen depiction often missed the character's subtle, meticulous, and human nuances.

To fully embody Poirot, Suchet undertook extensive preparation. He wrote a five-page study detailing 93 different aspects of the character's life, a document he shared with every director he worked with on the series. His dedication extended to reading every Poirot novel and short story, compiling comprehensive documentation.

Beyond his celebrated acting career, Suchet's personal life is marked by a lasting romance. He met his wife, Sheila Ferris, in 1972 at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry. The couple married on June 30, 1976, and have raised a son and a daughter.
