Poland analyzes tax-free allowance, second bracket increase amid coalition promises

The Polish Ministry of Finance is currently examining various proposals to adjust the tax scale, specifically focusing on increasing the tax-free allowance and the second tax bracket. This analysis comes in response to a key election promise made by the ruling Civic Coalition, which pledged to double the tax-free amount for individuals paying taxes on the standard scale, including entrepreneurs and retirees, from 30,000 PLN to 60,000 PLN.

Civic Coalition Senator Grzegorz Schetyna confirmed that Prime Minister Donald Tusk has given the green light to pursue this commitment. While acknowledging the potential for a phased implementation due to the current budget situation, Schetyna expressed confidence that the promise would be fulfilled before the end of the current parliamentary term. He emphasized the importance of delivering on such "spectacular" electoral pledges for the coalition's future success.

Echoing this sentiment, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, leader of the Polish People's Party (PSL) and Deputy Prime Minister, stated that the promise to raise the tax-free amount would be realized. He noted that Finance Minister Andrzej Domański is actively working on a well-considered proposal. Previously, Minister Domański had indicated that a significant increase in the tax-free amount might be challenging in 2026 and difficult in 2027, estimating the cost of raising it to 60,000 PLN at 54 billion PLN.
