Poland launches independent process to establish permanent U.S. military base

Poland has initiated formal legal and logistical steps to establish a permanent U.S. military base on its territory, a move driven by a desire for greater security assurance. Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the government's proactive approach, emphasizing that relying solely on Washington's commitments is insufficient.

He explained that the initiative seeks to build the essential financial and infrastructure framework to permanently host a larger contingent of U.S. troops. The decision follows a period of uncertainty regarding U.S. troop deployments. In May, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to send 5,000 additional troops to Poland, a commitment that has prompted Warsaw to accelerate its own preparations. Earlier in June, Poland's Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz proposed the establishment of a permanent base to U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, offering attractive conditions and financial commitment.

Currently, Poland hosts approximately 10,000 U.S. soldiers, primarily on a rotational basis, with the Polish government contributing around 140 million euros annually to support their presence. The establishment of a permanent base would represent a significant deepening of the military alliance between the two nations, underscoring Poland's strategic importance in Eastern Europe.
