Poland opens terrorism investigation after fire at drone factory

Polish prosecutors have opened a terrorism investigation after a fire at a drone factory was found to have been deliberately started.

The fire broke out at a WB Electronics facility in Skarżysko-Kamienna, in central Poland. Firefighters needed two hours to put out the blaze on Monday morning. The Internal Security Agency, known as ABW, joined the police inquiry.

Prosecutors said the investigation concerns participation in the activities of a foreign intelligence service directed against Poland, as well as a terrorist crime involving the intentional ignition of the company’s premises with a device containing flammable materials.

Authorities have not said who they suspect of setting the fire. Poland, a major ally of neighboring Ukraine, has repeatedly accused Russia since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine of attempting to carry out acts of sabotage. Several Eastern European countries have also said they have been targeted by espionage and sabotage, describing such attacks as part of what they call hybrid warfare and blaming Russia.
