Poland Protests Russian Missile Incursion, Citing NATO Security Concerns

Poland has lodged a diplomatic protest with Russia following the incursion of a cruise missile into its airspace, which subsequently detonated on farmland in the eastern part of the country. The incident has brought the consequences of the war in Ukraine dangerously close to NATO territory, although the Polish government has stated there is currently no evidence to suggest Poland was intentionally targeted.

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Russia's designate ambassador on Friday, July 31, 2026, to deliver a formal protest note. Deputy Foreign Minister Robert Kupiecki, who also serves as national security advisor to the Prime Minister, conveyed Warsaw's position. Investigators in Poland confirmed that the projectile, which fell the previous day, was a Kh-101 air-launched cruise missile, a type Russia has employed in its attacks on Ukraine. Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that the missile was manufactured in a facility near Moscow in the second quarter of 2026. He suggested this indicates Russia is using newly produced missiles in its Ukraine campaign, potentially supporting reports of dwindling wartime stockpiles. However, this assessment remains Kosiniak-Kamysz's opinion, and independent verification of Russia's overall missile inventory status based on a single production date is not available.

Warsaw calls the violation an act of hostility that endangers the security of a sovereign state and its population. Poland demands that Russia immediately cease such actions that threaten the safety of citizens and pose a risk of aviation disaster.

The missile fell near Tarnawa-Kolonia in Lublin Province, approximately 100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The explosion created a crater about 10 meters wide in a field, roughly two kilometers from the nearest residential buildings. No casualties or structural damage were reported. A local resident living about four kilometers away reported hearing a plane and feeling their windows vibrate.

The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces reported that an unidentified object entered Polish airspace around 3:40 AM local time on Thursday, July 30, 2026, before disappearing from radar. Police, alerted by reports of a large explosion, discovered the crater and debris in the agricultural field. A Mi-24 helicopter was deployed to the object's last known radar contact point to assist in the search and secure the area.
