Poland Registers 84 Same-Sex Marriage Transcriptions in First Week of New Law

Poland has seen a significant uptake in same-sex couples transcribing their foreign marriage certificates, with 84 couples utilizing the new regulations in the first week alone. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digitization Krzysztof Gawkowski announced that these registrations comprise 33 marriages between women and 51 between men.

These new provisions, which came into effect recently, allow same-sex couples to have their marriages, legally performed abroad, recognized and registered within Poland's Civil Registry Offices. Gawkowski described this period as "the first week of true dignity, equality, and respect," emphasizing that the state has passed the test by respecting the law and ensuring equal treatment.

In his assessment, 'the state has passed the test.' 'It respects the law, ensures equal treatment. It does not forbid loving one's family, regardless of who considers whom family,' he added.

The updated regulations, which include new document forms tailored for marriages between men, women, or a man and a woman, were necessitated by a ruling from the Court of Justice of the European Union and decisions from the Supreme Administrative Court. The Ministry of Digitization published the relevant decree in August, three months after its initial announcement, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and judicial precedents.
