Poland’s President to Attend King Harald’s Funeral

Polish President Karol Nawrocki will attend King Harald V’s funeral in Oslo on September 9, the Polish Embassy told Aftenposten. Much of the royal families of Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden will also attend, along with Japan’s crown princely couple and the royal couples of the Netherlands and Belgium.

The funeral is scheduled to take place at Oslo Cathedral at 1 p.m. The ceremony is expected to end around 3:50 p.m., when flags lowered to half-staff since the king’s death will be raised again. A salute from Akershus Fortress will mark the conclusion, with the exact timing subject to change.

Oslo authorities expect large crowds and significant restrictions in the city center. From 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, traffic will be blocked throughout central Oslo. People heading to the Royal Palace and Oslo Cathedral will have to enter through one of 10 access points.

Police will staff the entrances, where visitors should expect checks and searches and must show valid identification. Bicycles, scooters and umbrellas will not be allowed inside the cordoned area.
