Polar air mass brings abrupt temperature drop to Uruguay

Uruguay is set to experience a sharp temperature decline as a polar air mass makes its way into the country. This shift follows a period of cold fronts, heavy rains, and strong winds from an extratropical cyclone that caused damage across the nation.

Meteorologists describe the upcoming period as "good and cold weather." Maximum temperatures are unlikely to surpass 12°C, and some days may feel even cooler. This temperature drop is expected to persist for at least four days. Forecast models predict temperature anomalies between -2°C and -6°C below normal for the region, extending from Paraguay down to southern Brazil.

The GFS model predicts negative temperature anomalies from Friday, August 7 to Thursday, August 13, from Paraguay to the south, including Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil, of -2° to -6°C.

While the skies are expected to clear and remain sunny until mid-week, there's a chance of light drizzle along the coast on Saturday morning. Heavier rains are not anticipated to return to Montevideo until Wednesday or Thursday of the following week. Minimum temperatures will also fall, ranging between 9°C and 7°C from Friday to Saturday, and are expected to remain low for several days.
