Polavaram Project Phase-I on Track for 2027 Completion, Centre Confirms Funding Limits

The Indian central government has limited its financial support for the Polavaram irrigation project in Andhra Pradesh. Assistance for Phase-I is capped at water storage up to 41.15 meters, according to a statement by Union minister of state for Jal Shakti, Raj Bhushan Chowdary.

The Centre’s financial assistance for the Polavaram major irrigation project on the Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh is limited to approved irrigation components of Phase-I, restricting water impounding to 41.15 metres.

The project, designated a national project, is progressing as scheduled and remains on track for Phase-I completion by June 2027. Key remaining tasks include finishing the main dam works, land acquisition, and rehabilitation and resettlement activities.

Central funding covers Phase-I works for water storage up to 41.15 meters and all civil works up to the Full Reservoir Level of 45.72 meters. It also includes land acquisition and R&R up to 41.15 meters, as well as the Left Main Canal and Right Main Canal.

The work is right on track. The remaining critical milestones include completion of the main dam works in Gap-I and Gap-II, as well as land acquisition and rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) activities.

However, the Andhra Pradesh government will be solely responsible for the costs associated with the Polavaram Power House, as this component is not eligible for central assistance. The state government has been compliant with funding conditions, submitting necessary technical documents and utilization certificates on time for scrutiny by the Polavaram Project Authority.

The cost of the Polavaram Power House would have to be borne entirely by the Andhra Pradesh government as it falls outside the scope of Central assistance.
