Poles Support Mandatory Military Training for Women and Men

A recent survey reveals strong public backing in Poland for mandatory military training for all citizens, regardless of gender. This sentiment reflects a heightened awareness of national security concerns, largely driven by the ongoing geopolitical instability in the region, notably the war in Ukraine. While the idea of universal training garners significant support, the public remains largely resistant to the idea of reinstating mandatory conscription.

The study, conducted by IBRiS for "Rzeczpospolita," indicates that 37.7% of respondents favor the reintroduction of conscription, while a larger portion, 51.1%, oppose it. This opposition cuts across political lines, with similar percentages of those who do not vote, support the opposition, and support the ruling party expressing reservations. The data suggests that while Poles recognize the importance of military preparedness, they are hesitant about a return to the old system of compulsory service.

Demographic analysis shows that women, individuals in their thirties, and residents of both large cities and small towns are more likely to oppose conscription. Those with higher education and individuals who primarily get their international news from social media also lean towards opposition. Conversely, support for mandatory service is more prevalent among older generations (over sixty), rural residents, and those with lower levels of formal education. Voters from certain political parties, particularly those on the right and left, and those who consume news from specific media outlets, also show higher rates of support.

Military officials have indicated that while the government is not currently planning to reintroduce conscription, the possibility remains open, especially if the geopolitical situation deteriorates. The current focus is on making military training more attractive for volunteers. However, the existing "Defense of the Homeland" law allows for the swift reinstatement of conscription by the president upon the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, highlighting the government's preparedness for potential escalations.
