Police arrest 81, recover illicit drugs in Delta

Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested 81 suspected criminals during intelligence-led raids targeting identified criminal black spots within the Asaba metropolis. The operation, conducted on July 24, 2026, is part of the command's strategy to dismantle criminal networks and eliminate safe havens for offenders across the state.

Acting on credible intelligence, the operatives raided identified criminal flashpoints, leading to the arrest of 81 suspects comprising 50 males and 31 females.

The raids were spearheaded by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, accompanied by tactical teams. According to the command's spokesman, SP Bright Edafe, the operation led to the apprehension of 50 males and 31 females. The suspects face charges including the sale and possession of illicit drugs, as well as operating an illegal checkpoint near the Asaba-Onitsha Head Bridge.

During the enforcement exercise, police recovered significant quantities of Tramadol and substances suspected to be Indian hemp. Additionally, five vehicles were impounded for various violations, including operating an unauthorized taxi park and facilitating drug distribution. The arrested suspects and recovered exhibits are currently in police custody as investigations continue.

State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the command's commitment to intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention. He issued a stern warning to individuals involved in criminal activities, urging them to desist or face the full extent of the law.

The enforcement exercise also resulted in the impoundment of five vehicles for various violations, including operating an unauthorised taxi park at Pinnacle Junction along Okpanam Road and facilitating the sale and distribution of suspected illicit drugs within the area.
