Police arrest man for allegedly killing own father

Authorities in Rivers State, Nigeria, have confirmed the arrest of a man accused of fatally attacking his own father in Port Harcourt. The police spokeswoman, Blessing Agabe, stated that the suspect, believed to be in his mid-30s, allegedly used a machete to inflict multiple fatal injuries on his father.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday. According to Agabe, an assistant superintendent of police, the suspect is in custody and investigations have commenced. "Investigations have commenced with a view to ensuring that justice is served," she told journalists, adding that more details would be released as the inquiry progresses.

A witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity and claimed familiarity with the incident, identified the victim as retired marine captain Davide Nwoke. This source alleged that the dispute stemmed from disagreements over family property. The witness claimed that after receiving his share of the estate, the suspect demanded his father's car, insisting the elder should not take it to the village upon retirement.

The witness further alleged that the suspect hid in the family home and attacked his father with a machete upon his return from a morning exercise. The domestic worker who attempted to intervene was also reportedly attacked. The victim was allegedly attacked repeatedly until he died, after which the suspect took the car key and locked himself in a room. Neighbors were alerted by the housekeeper, leading to the suspect's arrest by officers from the Rumuokpani Police Division.
