Police arrest nine in Delta over illegal roadblocks, highway extortion

The Delta State Police Command has apprehended nine individuals in a statewide operation targeting illegal roadblocks and unauthorized revenue collection on highways. This enforcement action aligns with the Federal Government's directive to eradicate extortion and criminal activities plaguing Nigerian roads.

The operation, which commenced on Friday, focused on notorious areas where illegal tolling and roadblocks have hampered free movement and endangered motorists. Suspects were arrested at key locations, including the Head Bridge area bordering Delta and Anambra states, and along the Benin-Asaba Expressway near Agbor.

According to the state police public relations officer, SP Bright Edafe, all nine suspects are currently in custody. They will face charges in court once investigations are completed. The command reiterated its dedication to restoring order and ensuring the safety of highways throughout Delta State.

During the operation, nine suspects were arrested at strategic locations, including the Head Bridge axis, the boundary between Delta and Anambra states, and the Benin-Asaba Expressway by Agbor.

Authorities warned that similar enforcement exercises will be extended to other parts of the state to guarantee that motorists and commuters can travel without facing harassment or illegal levies. The police urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement during these ongoing operations.
