Police arrest passenger with ammunition in Edo

Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have apprehended a passenger found with 36 live ammunition cartridges during a routine stop-and-search in Benin City. The incident occurred on May 23, 2026, when police officers intercepted a minibus carrying seven passengers along the Benin–Auchi Road at Guobadia Junction.

On 23rd May, 2026, at about 1300hrs, officers attached to Ikpoba Hill Area Command, while on stop-and-search duty at Guobadia Junction along the Benin–Auchi Road, intercepted a minibus conveying seven passengers from Benin–Auchi Bypass to Ring Road, Benin City.

According to the command's Public Relations Officer, Ino Ikoedem, three male passengers attempted to flee upon sighting the police. Officers pursued and successfully apprehended one of the fleeing suspects, identified as 36-year-old Richard Gabriel from the Ovia South-West Local Government Area of Edo State.

During the operation, three male passengers suddenly abandoned their belongings and attempted to flee the scene.

A search of Gabriel's bag revealed the 36 live cartridges concealed within. The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, praised the vigilance and professionalism of the officers involved. He reassured residents of the command's dedication to combating crime and ensuring the safety of lives and property throughout the state. The command had previously reported the arrest of two suspected cultists and the recovery of a firearm.

The officers swiftly gave chase and successfully apprehended one of the fleeing suspects, identified as Richard Gabriel, 36 years old, from Ovia South-West Local Government Area of Edo State.
