Police Arrest Suspected Robber, Recover Stolen Motorcycle in Oyo

Oyo State Police have arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered a stolen motorcycle in Ibadan following a rapid response to a public distress report. The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 16, 2026, when a commercial motorcyclist was reportedly attacked and dispossessed of his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle in the Apata area.

Acting promptly on the actionable intelligence, operatives of the Command Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) were immediately deployed to the scene. Their swift intervention culminated in the arrest of the suspect, Shafiu Nuhu, and the recovery of the stolen Bajaj Boxer motorcycle with registration number AJW 842 QU, as well as the iron hammer allegedly used in perpetrating the attack.

According to a statement by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the victim, Muhammadu Kamilu, was allegedly struck with an iron hammer by a passenger who then stole his motorcycle. Operatives from the Command Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) were immediately deployed and successfully arrested the suspect, Shafiu Nuhu. They also recovered the stolen motorcycle and the iron hammer allegedly used in the attack.

Both men were promptly evacuated to a nearby hospital, where they received medical attention.

During the assault, Kamilu sustained injuries. A good Samaritan, Nathaniel Ibrahim, who attempted to intervene, was also injured. Both individuals received prompt medical attention at a nearby hospital.

Subsequent interrogation of the suspect yielded useful information, as he confessed to operating as a lone armed robber specializing in attacking and robbing commercial motorcyclists within Ibadan and its environs.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to operating alone and targeting commercial motorcyclists in Ibadan. The police are continuing their investigation to determine if Nuhu is involved in other similar criminal activities and to recover any additional exhibits. The Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, praised the vigilance of residents and the good Samaritan whose timely information and intervention facilitated the successful operation.
