Police arrest two over attempted theft of two-week-old baby in Abia

The Abia State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with an attempted child theft and assault in Umuahia. The suspects, identified as Nzubechi Chinagorom, 24, and Chinonso Chibundu, 25, allegedly went to the residence of Miss Amarachi Chinyereugo, 32, on May 25, 2026.

According to a police statement, Chinagorom attempted to forcefully take Chinyereugo's two-week-old baby girl. A struggle ensued, during which the mother was allegedly assaulted and stabbed with a kitchen knife. The infant reportedly fell and hit her head on the ground as a result of the altercation. Chibundu allegedly acted as a lookout outside the house.

Following a distress call from the victim, both suspects fled the scene. They were later apprehended at a nearby bus stop, where they were reportedly found in possession of substances suspected to be hard drugs. The mother and child were immediately taken to a hospital for treatment and have since recovered.

The police stated that the suspects have been arrested, exhibits recovered, and an investigation concluded. They are expected to be charged in court on June 2. The Abia State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and urged residents to cooperate in crime prevention.
