Police arrest woman over killing of three-year-old in Kwara

The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a woman, Sadiat Yunusa, in connection with the alleged killing of a three-year-old girl, Ummaiyat Y., in Kaiama Local Government Area. The incident reportedly stemmed from a prolonged domestic dispute fueled by jealousy.

On July 25, 2026, detectives commenced investigation into the tragic killing of Ummaiyat Y, a three-year-old girl, following a report received at the Kaiama Divisional Police Headquarters.

According to the Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, detectives began investigating the case on July 25 after receiving a report of the child's death under suspicious circumstances. Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect, Yunusa, lured the young child to a nearby farm settlement while her mother was away at the Kaiama Central Market. There, Yunusa allegedly caused the child's death by strangulation.

Preliminary findings established that the victim had been left in the care of a family member while her mother went to the Kaiama Central Market. During that period, the suspect, Sadiat Yunusa, allegedly lured the child away to a nearby farm settlement, where she unlawfully caused her death by strangulation.

Yunusa has confessed to the crime during interrogation, attributing her actions to resentment and jealousy arising from her husband's relationship with his second wife. She claimed her husband had neglected her and their three children in favor of the second wife. The suspect has been charged to court, and the police command assures the public of continued thorough investigation and prosecution of criminal cases.
