Police confirm investigation into gymnast Sabrina Voinea for alleged assault

Bucharest police have confirmed an investigation into gymnast Sabrina Voinea following allegations of assault against her boyfriend.

Sources close to the investigation identified the 19-year-old athlete as Sabrina Voinea. The incident reportedly occurred on June 3, 2026, at a sports complex in Sector 2. A 19-year-old male, identified by judicial sources as national team gymnast Șerban Cotîrlan and Voinea's boyfriend, filed a complaint alleging he was physically assaulted by Voinea.

According to a statement from the Capital Police, the conflict was described as spontaneous. Voinea allegedly struck the complainant with open hands and fists to his upper body. The victim was informed about the possibility of an extended protection order but declined to pursue such a measure. Police are continuing their investigation to establish the facts and determine the appropriate legal actions.

Reports from witnesses suggest the altercation began after Voinea reproached Cotîrlan for not spending enough time with her. The discussion escalated when Cotîrlan stated he could not spend the evening with her. Witnesses claim Voinea began verbally abusing him and then physically striking him, primarily targeting his body rather than his face. Cotîrlan reportedly did not retaliate.

Witnesses also indicated that the conflict may have occurred in multiple episodes. After the initial altercation, Cotîrlan reportedly went to retrieve his belongings from the Hotel Sport within the complex. Voinea allegedly followed him, continuing the verbal and physical aggression despite the presence of other people. The witnesses stated that Voinea did not stop her actions even with others present, and Cotîrlan continued to refrain from retaliating.
