Police create unified crime response unit in Abuja

In a significant move to streamline operations and enhance efficiency, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dissolved its various tactical squads. These units have been merged into a single, unified formation known as the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU). This decision, announced by the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Sanusi, aims to create a more coordinated and effective framework for tackling violent crimes across the territory.

The CP announced that, in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, all Tactical Teams within the Command have been dissolved and merged into a single, unified unit known as the Violent Crime Response Unit.

The newly established VCRU will exclusively handle responses to violent criminal activities within the FCT. This consolidation is expected to improve response times and operational discipline, ensuring a more robust security apparatus. The move aligns with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who has stressed a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct among officers.

CP Sanusi commended his officers for their dedication, noting the relatively low crime rates in the FCT in recent months. However, he urged them to remain vigilant and adopt proactive strategies to counter emerging security threats. The Commissioner explicitly warned against acts of extortion, harassment, and other unprofessional behaviors, emphasizing that such infractions will face strict disciplinary action. Supervisory officers will be held accountable for the misconduct of their subordinates, reinforcing a culture of responsibility.
