Police dismantle 'mahiya' production site near Aklo beach

Moroccan police successfully dismantled a traditional facility for distilling "mahiya," a local illicit spirit, in the coastal area near Aklo beach in the Tiznit province. The operation, conducted Friday, was a coordinated effort by the judicial police and parallel security services.

During the operation, a 50-year-old man with multiple prior convictions was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the illegal activity. Authorities seized about 700 liters of "mahiya" along with equipment used in its production. Sources indicate the suspect was planning to capitalize on the summer tourist season, when Aklo beach attracts many visitors, to distribute his illegal product. He also intended to sell quantities in the city of Tiznit.

This marks the second such dismantling by the Tiznit judicial police in the Aklo commune this year. Earlier in the year, a similar "mahiya" production site was broken up in the Douar El Kala area, resulting in the seizure of approximately two tons of the spirit.
