Police foil kidnapping attempt and rescue Kano community leader

Police in Kano State say they rescued a traditional community leader after suspected bandits abducted him during a late-night attack in Garun Mallam.

The attackers invaded the town at about 11:30 p.m. on Saturday and fired shots into the air, according to Kano police spokesperson Haruna Kiyawa. They abducted Yusif Nadabo, the community’s traditional chief, who holds the title Sarkin Noman Kano.

Three young residents, Yusif Nasiru, Salisu Garba and Ibrahim Hassan, all aged 20, were also shot during the attack. They were taken to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for emergency treatment. Police said Nadabo received a medical examination after his rescue.

The police, working in close collaboration with community members, gave the hoodlums a hot chase.

Tactical and patrol teams from nearby divisions responded after receiving a distress call. Kiyawa said officers worked with residents, local vigilantes and Neighbourhood Watch members to pursue the attackers. The gunmen abandoned Nadabo and escaped into the bush under pressure, he said.

Police have deployed additional confidence-building patrols in and around Garun Mallam and launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects. Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Bakori praised the rapid response and the assistance provided by residents. Police urged the public to remain calm and share credible information that could help identify and arrest the perpetrators.
