Police intensify rescue of abducted Niger worshippers

Security agencies in Nigeria's Niger State have escalated their efforts to rescue Muslim worshippers abducted by suspected bandits in the Borgu Local Government Area. The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has personally deployed Assistant Inspector-General Victor Olaiya to lead and coordinate the rescue mission.

This intensified operation involves collaboration with other security agencies, aiming for the safe release of those taken. The state's Commissioner of Police, Adamu Elleman, represented by spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the operation began following the IGP's directive. Police are actively analyzing intelligence and developing strategies for a successful outcome. Specialized units, including the Counter-Terrorism Unit and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, have also been deployed to bolster the efforts.

The Niger State government has pledged continued support, with Commissioner for Homeland Security Maurice Magaji emphasizing the commitment to protecting lives and property. Magaji urged residents to provide useful information to security agencies and criticized attempts to politicize the state's insecurity issues. He stressed that peace is essential for development and called for collective action from government, security forces, traditional institutions, and communities.

Borgu is one of the areas in Niger State experiencing significant security challenges, including attacks and abductions attributed to bandits. The recent kidnapping of worshippers has heightened concerns for residents in vulnerable communities. Authorities state the immediate priority is the safe rescue of the abducted individuals.
