Osun election violence victims invited to submit claims for relief

Victims of violence that marred the August 15 Osun governorship election are being called upon to come forward and present their cases to the state's newly formed Election Violence Relief Committee (EVRC). The committee aims to provide support and ensure that those who suffered losses receive appropriate compensation.

The assignment of the committee was both humanitarian and sensitive, stressing that its responsibility was to listen to victims, verify genuine claims and ensure that appropriate relief reached those who suffered losses as a result of election-related violence.

Adewale Egbedun, Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly and chairman of the EVRC, announced the invitation during the committee's inaugural meeting. He emphasized that the committee's mandate is to listen to victims, verify the authenticity of their claims, and facilitate the delivery of relief. Egbedun assured the public that the committee would operate with fairness, transparency, and impartiality, treating all submissions with seriousness and basing decisions on facts, fairness, and compassion.

The committee is particularly reaching out to individuals who sustained injuries and are still undergoing medical treatment. Their relatives or representatives are encouraged to present these cases. The EVRC will then liaise with the hospitals to ensure the necessary care is provided, with the government committed to covering the approved treatment costs.

Furthermore, the Adeleke Dynasty, through the Springtime Development Foundation, has pledged to sponsor scholarships for children who lost parents or benefactors due to the election violence. This initiative highlights a commitment to supporting the long-term well-being of affected families.

He assured the public that the committee would discharge its responsibilities fairly, transparently and without prejudice, noting that every submission would be treated with utmost seriousness and decisions would be guided by facts, fairness and compassion.

The committee has already begun collating complaints and assures victims and the public that the government remains dedicated to addressing the consequences of the election-related violence. The overarching goal is to provide a measure of healing and support to those impacted by the events.

The chairman further assured the victims, their families and the hospitals involved that the government remained committed to taking responsibility for the approved cost of their treatment.
