Police kill robbery suspect, arrest 8 in Tema crackdown

Authorities in Ghana's Tema region have intensified efforts to curb violent crime, resulting in the death of a suspected armed robber during a fierce exchange of gunfire. The Tema Regional Police Command reported that the shootout occurred at Zenu Obaatan after police, acting on intelligence, confronted four suspects. The suspects reportedly opened fire first, prompting officers to return fire in self-defense. One suspect sustained fatal injuries and was later pronounced dead at the hospital, while a police officer received treatment for minor injuries. Three other suspects managed to escape, believed to be wounded.

In parallel operations, the police have arrested eight individuals in connection with separate armed robbery and murder cases. These arrests are part of a broader crackdown aimed at restoring order and safety in the region. Among the recovered items are a significant quantity of stolen rice and fertilizer, seized from suspects who were found loading them onto a truck near the Tema Industrial Area. These operations have led to the remand of several suspects by the court, with investigations ongoing into multiple incidents, including a large-scale robbery at a warehouse where thousands of bags of rice and cartons of sardines were stolen.

Health facilities in the area had also been alerted to report persons seeking treatment for gunshot wounds.

The police have also made progress in a murder investigation dating back to May 18, arresting two individuals in connection with the death of Korletey Adjawutor at a sand-winning site. While two suspects have been granted bail, police are actively pursuing three other identified individuals. The regional police commander assured the bereaved family of their commitment to bringing all perpetrators to justice, emphasizing the command's dedication to tackling violent crime across the area.
