Police launch task force for revised Criminal Procedure Act implementation

The Korean National Police Agency has established a dedicated task force to navigate the significant changes brought about by the revised Criminal Procedure Act. This task force will focus on managing the transition following the abolition of prosecutors' supplementary investigation powers, a key provision of the new law.

Operating from August 5 until the law's effective date on October 2, the task force is headed by acting Police Commissioner General Yoo Jae-seong. It includes senior officials from various departments, such as planning, investigation, personnel, and public affairs. The group will convene weekly to address critical issues arising from the legal reform.

Central to the task force's agenda are measures to enhance the fairness of police investigations, as outlined in the "Plan to Strengthen Police Investigation Fairness" announced at a cabinet meeting. Discussions will also encompass strengthening disciplinary actions and penalties for police corruption, reinforcing police personnel and budget, and aligning internal regulations with the new legal framework. The implementation of recommendations from the recently formed Police Investigation Reform Committee, composed primarily of external experts, will also be a priority.

The police agency stated its commitment to ensuring a smooth implementation of the revised law. "We will proceed with follow-up measures swiftly and meticulously through the task force to ensure the revised Criminal Procedure Act takes root in the field and leads to enhanced protection of citizens' human rights and interests," the agency said in a statement. The outcomes of the task force's deliberations will be communicated to the public.
