Police Officer Accused of Murdering Partner After Festival in Huancayo; Remains at Large

Tragedy struck in Huancayo, Peru, when María Fernanda Jurado Ontón, a 24-year-old industrial engineering student, was fatally shot in the head. The incident occurred late Wednesday night at a residence in the Chilca district, shortly after she and her partner, off-duty police officer Juan Johnel Cóndor Jayo, returned from a Santiago festival celebration. Preliminary investigations suggest a jealousy-fueled argument escalated into violence on the third floor of the building.

Jurado Ontón was critically injured and rushed to the Daniel Alcides Carrión hospital, but she succumbed to her wound during the journey. The bullet reportedly perforated her skull. Following the shooting, neighbors alerted authorities. Upon entering the apartment, they found Jurado Ontón bleeding profusely. Reports indicate that Cóndor Jayo, who serves with the Escuadrón Verde, may have expressed intentions of self-harm with his firearm before fleeing the scene.

The suspect reportedly went to his father's house in Huamanmarca before disappearing again early Thursday morning. He is believed to have taken his service weapon and, according to Jurado Ontón's family, her victim's cell phone as well. Authorities have initiated extensive operations to track down Cóndor Jayo and ascertain his role in the death.

Forensic experts and police have processed the scene, collecting evidence to aid the fiscal investigation. María Fernanda's mother, Paulina Ontón Zapata, expressed profound grief and demanded justice. She recounted a final phone call with her daughter, who had promised to return home soon. Jurado Ontón, who was in her final year of university and a mother to a 7-year-old son, was on the cusp of graduation. Her family insists on a transparent investigation, given the suspect's position within the police force.
