Police officer killed as suspected armed herders attack Benue checkpoint

A police officer has been killed in a suspected attack by armed herders on a security checkpoint in Uzer community, Logo Local Government Area, Benue State, Nigeria. The incident occurred when assailants stormed a joint police and military checkpoint, prompting a response from troops stationed in Ayilamo and a team of mobile police officers.

According to a local source, the attackers fled into nearby bushes as the security forces advanced. During a subsequent follow-up operation to track the fleeing assailants and restore normalcy, troops reportedly discovered the body of a Police Inspector who had been killed in the attack. The deceased officer's remains were taken to the Ayilamo Hospital mortuary.

The Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, confirmed the loss of a police personnel in the attack. "I can confirm that we lost one of our officers in Ayilamo, as the report stated. Operations in that axis are still ongoing to bring the perpetrators to book," Aondongu stated.

In response to the attack, security forces have increased patrols and surveillance around Uzer, Ayilamo, and other border communities within Logo LGA to prevent further incidents and apprehend those responsible.
