Police smash armed robbery gang in Ondo, recover guns

Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have apprehended three individuals suspected of belonging to a notorious interstate armed robbery syndicate. The gang allegedly terrorized parts of Ondo and Lagos States. The suspects, identified as Promise Daniel (34), Ifeanyi Umahi (29), and Adaramoye Abayomi (37), were arrested on Saturday, July 18, after a targeted intelligence-led operation.

The arrest was made in connection with an armed robbery case initially reported on 14th June, 2026, at Iju Division, Ita-Ogbolu, Akure North Local Government Area.

Police Commissioner Felix Ohagwu stated that the arrests are linked to an armed robbery case reported on June 14, 2026, in the Iju Division. During a search of the suspects' vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz ML 350 SUV, officers recovered an AK-47 rifle with 18 rounds of ammunition, a Beretta pistol with four rounds, an axe, and an iron cutter. Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects are part of a syndicate that has been under surveillance for violent robberies across Ondo State.

During interrogation, the suspects reportedly provided confessions regarding the ownership of the recovered weapons and their involvement in other criminal activities. This information is aiding investigators in their efforts to track down other fleeing gang members and fully understand the scope of their operations. The police have emphasized that the recovered weapons are linked to the syndicate's violent robberies.

Acting on credible intelligence and sustained surveillance, the operatives intercepted the suspects while they were travelling in a Mercedes-Benz ML 350 SUV (ash colour).

The arrests occurred shortly after an incident on Sunday, July 19, where gunmen ambushed Adebusoye Atinuke, 50, along the Ondo–Ile-Oluji Road. The assailants opened fire on her vehicle in an apparent attempt to rob her. However, Mrs. Atinuke managed to escape unharmed by continuing to drive at high speed. Police spokesperson Jimoh Abayomi confirmed that a full-scale investigation and manhunt for the assailants are underway.
