Police Superintendent Suspended Amid Allegations of Leaking Investigation Information in Influencer Case

A high-ranking official within the National Police Agency, identified as Superintendent A, has been suspended following serious allegations of leaking sensitive investigation details. This action comes amid an ongoing probe by prosecutors into claims that Superintendent A accepted bribes to obstruct justice in a fraud case involving a prominent influencer.

The investigation centers on suspicions that Superintendent A provided confidential information about the fraud investigation to a wealthy businessman, identified as Mr. Lee, who is himself under scrutiny for stock manipulation. Mr. Lee allegedly sought the superintendent's help to quash the inquiry into his wife, Ms. B, who operates a pilates franchise and faces accusations of fraud and violating franchise laws from several franchisees.

Prosecutors from the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office's Financial and Securities Crime Joint Investigation Unit reportedly uncovered evidence of communication between Mr. Lee and Superintendent A, prompting them to execute a search and seizure warrant at the National Police Agency earlier this month. This investigation is part of a broader effort to uncover any illicit dealings and ensure accountability within law enforcement. A separate investigation into a different police officer, Superintendent C from the Gangnam Police Station, who was previously in charge of Ms. B's case, is also underway, with Superintendent C having been reassigned and subsequently suspended.
