Police: Suspect in two murder cases deliberately rammed random oncoming car

Finnish police suspect that a man first killed a woman in an apartment in Vaasa and then deliberately drove into a random oncoming car in Laihia.

The collision occurred at about 4:25 a.m. on Saturday on Vaasa Road. The driver of the oncoming car died, while two passengers were injured. Police suspect the man steered his car directly into the other vehicle without knowing who was inside. He fled on foot and was tracked for about three kilometers with the help of a police dog before seeking help near a populated area.

After officers located him, they learned of a serious incident at an apartment in Vaasa’s Palosaari district. The apartment door was extremely hot and the interior was filled with smoke when police arrived. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and found a dead woman inside.

I will not comment on the motives, they are under investigation.

Police suspect the woman was a homicide victim and that the fire had been deliberately started. They also suspect the man of aggravated criminal damage and aggravated endangerment of traffic safety. The woman and the suspect were reportedly in a relationship, and police said the suspect had no previous criminal record.

Investigators have described their understanding of the sequence as fairly good, partly because the suspect has explained some events to police. Detective Chief Inspector Mia Uunila said the case still required investigative work because it was serious and complex. She said intoxicants played no role but declined to comment on the motive, the woman’s cause of death or whether she had already died when the fire began. The suspect is also accused in connection with two murders and two attempted murders, as the investigation continues.
